Default Bali teen jailed for stealing 1,000 rupiah

Prosecutors at the Denpasar District Court in Bali are pressing on with criminal charges against a 15-year-old boy accused of snatching a purse containing a Rp 1,000 (11 cents) note despite his being a minor.

The boy, D.W., was charged with theft under the Criminal Code on Thursday.

“The prosecution concluded from the initial investigation that the defendant could be prosecuted because he committed a criminal offense,” the lead prosecutor in the case, Ni Wayan Relawati Susiana, told the court in his indictment.

The court was closed for public viewing because the defendant is a juvenile.

The court, presided over by Judge Puji Harian, was told that the boy was briefly detained on March 27 but then released while the investigation into the alleged theft continued.

Prosecutors said that the boy subsequently failed to reappear for questioning after being summoned.

D.W. was rearrested on Nov. 5. Police locked him up at Kerobokan Prison in Badung district. The adult prison does not have a special unit for juvenile offenders.

Thesy Oktarini Siregar, D.W.’s lawyer, said it was likely the boy would be placed in a Social Affairs Ministry rehabilitation facility rather than being sent to prison.

The way I look at it, he isn't being arrested for stealing rp 1,000 but for snatching a purse. It shouldn't matter how much it had in there.

Jailed? He was jailed for purse snatching and stealing 1,100Rp??

The police know who the suspects are who seriously attacked us and robbed us of lots more than 1,000Rp. They know their address and they can't even be bothered to question the men let alone arrest them. The woman who had the purse must have paid a lot more than we did and I thought we paid enough.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat drinking beer all day.
