A CENTRAL Coast teenager charged with buying marijuana in Bali has been sentenced to two months jail.
The 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named, cried when a judge found him guilty of purchasing 3.6 grams of marijuana from a street seller, and carrying it in his shorts pocket.
The teenager has already spent almost two months in a Balinese prison, which means he will be due for release on December 4, and home for Christmas.
Judge Amser Simanjuntak told the boy his behavior was "shameful" and requested he undergo rehabilitation in Australia.
Chief Prosecutor Gusti Gede Putu Atmaja had requested the teen be sentenced to three months jail, under the serious Indonesian Narcotics Law.
He said he would not appeal the sentence.
The teenager's lawyer Muhammad Rifan said the outcome was better than the possible three months jail.
The boy was arrested on October 4, after allegedly buying 3.6 grams of marijuana from a street seller in Kuta.
He has been in police custody ever since.
The sentence takes into account the time the boy has already served, meaning he will be released in 10-days time.
He also was given a 2000 rupiah fine, which equates to 22 cents.
The boy's father stood behind him and rested his hand on his son's shoulder for support, as the judge read out his sentencing.

that must be a misprint...2000rupiah fine,![]()
don't read between the lines..i think the words are clear enough...:)
I thought so, too. But I think that's what he was fined!
Go figure, as they say.
I wrote this comment on Jakarta Globe, earlier today:
Not sure what this young boy has learned, apart from the fear of being in custody and the sentence he could have got.
As it stands, sounds unusually lenient to me. And fined a whopping Rp 2,000. Talk about being "lucky".
I agree, unusually lenient..who knows there might be shining a light at the end of the tunnel![]()

Gilbert, did you not know? Since recently no more lights at the end of the tunnel;
Wasn't he a lucky boy? Now home before Xmas and $250,000 for his "life" story. Anybody care to guess what this "poor" boy has learned from his harrowing experience?
1) smoking dope is great!
2) get caught then make sure there's lots of media around
3) keep your eye on dad when the check lands
I found this interesting.
Compensation...?!! Does the word even exist in the Indonesian language.Bali judge influenced by potential damages claim
An Indonesian judge has said the possibility of a compensation claim influenced his decision to hand a jail sentence to an Australian teenager on drugs charges.
......Justice Amser Simanjuntak says he took into account that the boy has already been locked up, so if he was not sentenced to jail time he might have been able sue the Indonesian government for compensation.

It seems to me the judge has done well. Clearly, some sentence was required. To give one just a few days longer than what he has already done works well. But I admit his talk of possible compensation made me smile.
