AN AUSTRALIAN teenager on ''schoolies'' holiday in Bali was electrocuted as he walked down the busy Kuta tourist strip early yesterday with a group of friends.
Jake Mitchell Flannery, 18, from the central coast of New South Wales, died about 2.30am as he tried to navigate a section of footpath where roadworks were being carried out.
He inadvertently grabbed a neon sign that had a powerful current surging through it.
Witnesses said he tried to squeeze between a large pile of new paving and Jokers cafe on Jalan Legian when the incident occurred. Police are investigating.
His parents in Australia are being counselled by officers from the Department of Foreign Affairs, who are also assisting his friends in Bali.
Bali is packed with young Australians on the ''schoolies'' break, celebrating the end of high school.
Jokers cafe is right in the heart of Kuta's nightclub and bar precinct.
The teenager's uncle, John Flannery, said the boy's parents were ''very upset, everyone is''.
Other family members were too distressed to comment.
The teenager had just completed year 12 at Gosford High School, a selective school where he studied maths and played goalie on the school hockey team.

these people who invest on Jalan Legian, re the property value one of the most expensive streets in Indonesia, easily spends billions of Rupiah for their businesses, how could it be that they can't hire contractors who are able to isolate cables properly? Stinginess?
