A 28-YEAR-old Australian man is in police custody in Bali following the stabbings of two other Australian men in a bar fight.
"We can confirm that a 28-year old Australian man has been detained in Bali in connection with the stabbing," a spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement today.
The Nine Network named an Australian man who was living and working in Indonesia as a DJ.
Bali police have simply referred to him as JL, and say they have also charged an Indonesian accomplice, known as JA, the Jakarta Globe reports.
Police said the man could face up to nine years in jail.
"The two suspects were friends, and we have charged them both with assault ... which carries a maximum penalty of nine years' imprisonment," Kuta district police chief Gede Ganefo told the newspaper.
Two Australian men were stabbed at the Bounty Discotheque near Kuta Beach after a fight broke out about 2am (5am AEDT) on Friday.
Jake Benjamin Whitehead, of Newcastle in NSW, who was stabbed in his right armpit and the top of his chest during the fight, returned to Australia on Saturday.
The second victim, Chris Mete, 26, was stabbed in the stomach and was taken to the intensive care unit at Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar.
