UPDATE SOON![]()
Its a shame more people have put in any more "food for thought"... terrible pun. I apologise.
I basically liked nasi goreng which is a fried rice mixed with meat and vegetables and lawar which is a Balinese salad when I visited Bali few year back.
Believe it or not I've spent the last 3 years eating Indonesian and Balinese food and, above the basic meals, have no clue what I've been eating!
If you move around the island a lot like I have been I find that all the meals listed may have the same names but can be worlds apart in what they consist of - even in the same warung it's a toss up if you get the same ingredients twice - either they haven't shopped or they've changed chief/cook or they have something in the fridge (one hopes) that must be sold as it is going off
In watching the Balinese with how and what they eat I've found that they seem to go to restaurants and order stuff that isn't even on any menu. They seem to know what's good at what place and then when you see what comes out it's great. Have asked where that is on the menu and you get that lovely Balinese smile (saying "sorry but you should know that isn't on the menu").
Had this great meal of deep fried noodles with some meat and vegetables on top in a red sauce - no clue what it was or if I will ever find it again but it was great. In short still just go into restaurants and point "that one".
