Postby Vani on Sun Oct 07, 2007 1:29 pm

Hi everyone. Have just had my first visit to Bali!!!! and have fallen in love with their coffee, soo much nicer than the stuff I have tried here. So, can anyone tell me where I can buy Golden Butterfly Bali Coffee in Perth or Fremantle, WA. Looking forward to a good supply.
Thanks guys, Vani

I haven't seen those brands in Perth. If you go to an Asian foodstore someimes you can find Bali / Indonesian coffee. There is one called Bali Dancer in a tin, which is quite expensive. Sometimes you can get another one in a packet - sorry can't remember the name, it's not too bad, but neither are like the freshly ground 'good stuff' you get in Bali (or other parts of Indonesia).

When I was in Lombok in May, my sister-in-law cooked up some of the coffee grown where she lives, and then got it ground in the village and we brought it back with us. Absolutely wonderful.

I love my coffee.. wouldn't go near a Starbucks or instant (bit of a coffee snob I am). Surprised you are into it Balilife, I had the impression you were a connoisseur of fine foods/beverages. :D

Hmmm, well I drink the b'fly brand (the only large brand here) daily but because of price (and as every junkie knows, quality yields to quantity), it's 1/4 the price of the least expensive Starbucks of which there are at least 3 in the K'town area. Copi Bali not my fave as it requires a little sugar for me. Ironically I'm having a very difficult time locating a local brand of the Sumatran fair-trade organic coffee as it apparently all goes overseas for processing and what returns is $12US a pound, have to pay extra for the transport carbon....it's gett'n hot in here!

Still, I like knowing my coffee is grown up the hill :-). G'luck Vani!

Freo - he did say especially in Indo - not much choice here.

I think Starbucky's, as we called it back home, coffee is very good and as good as any needs to be unless I was as obsessed with it as I am homebuilding. No, it's the fact they they want to take over the world that bothers me - in downtown Wash, DC you can stand at a busy intersection and there's one on each corner - that and the fact they made it ok to charge a day's wage for a cup a jo!

Toraja coffee is one of the worlds finest. I am fortunate enough to have a decent size area under Arabica cultivation but gor myself I prefer a mix of Arabica, Robusta and about 5-7 chocolate beans per 1 kilo roast.

PS I am a coffee snob :-)

Ah talking about coffee, I just remember something, and this piece of information might be useful (depending on your taste) to coffee drinkers out there. Have anyone heard of Cat Poo's Coffee??

Well here are the stories. You might already know, but it hasn't come up in this forum as yet.

Yes I have been to this Heritage Tea Room cafe, but not being a coffee drinker myself, I haven't sampled their finest offering.

Oh, somebody was thinking about an Expat business - this one could be an idea

Hmm, this cat might be a relative of the Bali's nocturnal animal the Lubak, which also leave droppings of certain berries/nuts. I believe you can also purchase these roasted at village Warungs :D

Have a nice read

This is the coffee made from the droppings of the musang. A contributor to BTF is the guy who has started this business - can't remember who. It featured on that Border Patrol TV show when someone tried to bring it in through customs!

OK I'm pretty fussy about my coffee, but think I'd draw the line at Musang air besar kope! (or whatever the correct grammar would be  )

DCC - no Starbucks in Perth yet, but I've tried it in Melbourne, and US of course. No creme, no good.

I followed the recycled coffe story a couple years back and if my memory serves me it was reported to sell for around $100 per pound.

Jimbo - Are you saying you grow your own? Would love some resource references if you have any........how long does it take to realize a crop?

Damn, I suspect most Italians (and indeed most Australians and NZers I know here) would cause GBH to anyone who mentioned Starbucks and Coffee in the same sentence....

Still in North America, anything resembling coffee is hard to find :P

DC I do not grow it personally the family does. As a farmer I am on a scale with my operatic singing ( on a scale of 1-10 I am -20) However I am pretty good at the roasting part. Maria took about 15 kilo's back to the UK with here in vacuum packed bean form. This will last about 2 years.

It is not however difficult to grow on the hills of Toraja. Bali coffee is also grown on the cooler hill regions and is very good but for me Torajan coffe is better but then of course I am predudiced :-)
