The Puputan Mass Suicide

In 1904 a Chinese ship sailing under Dutch flag wrecked off Sanur, South Bali.

After rescuing the crew, the citizens of the Balinese kingdom Badung plundered it overnight. The Dutch demanded the ruler of Badung to pay a forfeit which was negotiated over a two year period and finally rejected by the Balinese. Consequently, in 1906 the Dutch forces landed at Sanur, mounting a naval bombardment against Bali 's today's capital, Denpasar. After realizing that defeat was inevitable, more than 4,000 Balinese soldiers and civilians marched consciously into death, dressed in their finery.
