I have read a book called " Balians: Traditional Healers of Bali" by Bradford Keeney and there is a mangku by the name of Mangku I Made Pogog that i found remarkable. I Made is a sixth generation balian but what sets him apart from the others is that he heals with his tongue. So for example, if you have a continuous headache, he will lick your head. He then goes on to describe how he has treated patients with leprosy, he says he feels nothing but the overwhelming urge to heal and has no repulsion to the leprosy wounds etc. He licks the wounds. This mangku no longer practices as he had a stoke and is now bedridden, but i sure would like to meet him .....
Just for the record, and to clarify Charlie’s post, the term Mangku refers to priests. Some priests are also balians, but not all priests are balians and most balians are not priests.
It’s also noteworthy to point out that not all balians deal with healing physical ailments. Many of them specialize in mental ailments, and also can provide remedies for black magic.
Thanks Roy, i get a bit excited
