Once there was a foreigner in Bali....
Who bought a nice bit of land, and wanted to build his house there....
On the land however there was a small temple, and this temple had to go.
The foreigner asked his workers to break down the temple, but they refused..
"How can build a house with this temple in my future living?, it has to go!"
Nobody wanted to break it down, so the foreigner took a sledgehammer and hammered away. Once he got to the temple foundation a black snake escaped from the stones, and bit the foreigner.
It didn't take long for the poison to find its way, and the foreigner died.
(I just heard this story somewhere, but as far as I understood, the foreigner (German, I believe) really did die while constructing his house)
You are sure it was a german guy ?
Maybe it was a German snake. :lol:Originally Posted by macupblue

Yes Bert,
That's a story commonly told around Singaraja. Yes, he was German and yes he did die. I'm going with a first hand source on this. Interesting story and one of those that Bali expats love to tell to tourists. I have a few of my own in a similar vein, but I'll save them for another time.
I have another similar story, but with a different twist. This is a story expats do not recount to tourists, for obvious reasons.
Many years ago, in 1986, it was my 3rd visit to Bali. Like most newcomers to Bali, I wanted my own house, and after looking around Ubud, I found what I thought was the perfect place: right in Sayan, near Kedewatan. A Balinese friend who was going to help me to "lease" a piece of land so I could build a house on it , declined to do so when I took him to the place I had chosen (and which was for sale!). It was a spot, overlooking the Ayung river, in my book still the most spectacular view in Bali. It was kind of too large for my need, but I thought I could maybe lease only a part of it. This small piece of land happened to be right next to a small Pura Dalem; "not a good place, bad spirits, the Gods wont approve" and my friend refused to even try to pursue it any further for me. I was of course very disappointed, and because I insisted, maybe too forcefully, we soon were friends no longer.
This place I had chosen is where Amandari has been standing now for many years, and given the success of this enterprise, I would say that the Gods must be in agreement with the Aman family…
Keep on smiling.

I forgot to add that this small Pura Dalem was levelled in the process of erecting the Amandari.
Keep on smiling.

For those of us who have no idea what you are talking about could you please expand on your story.
What is Amandari.
Thanks

Amandari is a luxury resort near Ubud, part of the Aman Resort group of companies, based in Singapore I think.
If you want to stay there next time you vist Bali, be prepared to fork out $US700 per night.
