We've just been through this experience ourselves so can speak from some experience.
Couldn't agree more about the Bali Advertiser - so overpriced!
Asia Bazaar on Sunset is a good place to go if you want to find out what is out there and approximate costs. I'm a bit dubious about their quality but its a good place to start.
There are a few 2nd hand places around (there's one opposite Mitra 10 on gatsu) where you can find some nice stuff amongst all the crap. Again, they seem to have an overinflated idea on what their stuff is worth so bargain hard!
if you're getting stuff made, then I really recommend you micromanage the process, visiting the workshop continually as its made, because (and again I speak from experience!) the final product can be really different to what you thought you agreed on.
Finally, if you're into renewable resources there's some really great stuff being made out of bamboo (and other non-rainforest material). The place attached to the Green School is good place to start looking.
Hope this helps.
Phil
ps
I know this related to another thread but I also think renting furniture out would be a winner, especially given that delivery/pickip costs ate so cheap in bali
There is a shop down near the prison. Its name is the number of the street it is on and if I recall right it is 111 but I will look it up if anyone wants. It was recommended to me by a friend and I bought a fair bit of wooden furniture there. The asking prices are the right prices, well definitely fair in my opinion. I bought pieces from between Rp300,000 - Rp2,500,000. Costs include delivery. You can get nice wooden furniture there for less than the cost of an item for similar function and made from MDF in Carrefour.
It is a massive warehouse type place stacked with all sorts and many are samples. Orders usually take 1 week to fill. I would recommend them very highly.

I too have bought furniture from 101 over the past 10 or so years, prices are reasonable and the quality is good.
Can I please get driving directions from Sanur to to the furniture shop 101? I really would like to check out their shop...Thanks!
there's an adress and short desciption two posts up from mimpimanis...
you could try googlemaps or is it yahoo maps with driving directions...anyways, one (or both) have an adressline A and adressline B and it will show you on a map how to drive and also a description like after XX meter turn left, xx meter follow the road, etcetc..
don't read between the lines..i think the words are clear enough...:)
Yep, thanks...I find it's so much easier getting directions from someone as google maps sometimes takes you to non-exsistant roads or streets that you may not want to be lost about, but I'll give google maps a try.
Aloha, from Sanur head in to Kuta via the bypass. At Simpang Siur (the big statue with the roundabout, Planet Hollywood on your left), turn right into Sunset Road (it's the second fork around the roundabout).
On Sunset Road, head towards Kerobokan (about 4 or 5 kms) and just before the end of Sunset Road there's a set of traffic lights at jln Mertanadi. Turn right into Mertanadi and 101 is at the end of this street. The prison will be on your right and opposite 101.
Jalan Mertanadi is the 4th set of traffic lights after you join Sunset Road from Simpang Siur. Good luck!
