Into Australia, from almost every country, animals must be quarantined as we are a rabies free country (as Indonesia) Every country has different criteria but from US we quarantine our dogs in Hawaii. This would be the way for US citizens to go. The animals are boarded in Hawaii for the specified length of time then brought in from Hawaii as it is rabies free. I see in the quarantine notes that import of animls into Indonesia from Hawaii is fine.
Can you tell me if the country they are coming from is rabbies free do they still have to go into quarantine. My problem taking my dogs would be if I have to come back to Australia for any length of time I would want them to come with me.
Hi Stormfever - your retirement dream sounds lovely. It is possible to bring cats to Indonesia IF they are from a rabies free country. Take a look at this website

I went through similar agony, and decided that I couldn't live my life for a cat (in my case one). It was the hardest thing I ever did, but I found a lovely lady who now has my cat - and they totally love each other. Still I cry every time I see them.
For me I thought very carefully about what life would be like for my cat in Indonesia - would he cope with the climate? would he be driven to distraction by the countless insects that you can't keep outside?
Would he interact with local cats and catch some horrible disease?
The list goes on.
My cat was an inside cat, but having lived in Indonesia, I knew most housing is not sealed up like in Australia, or England - it would be very hard to keep a cat inside.
Once I was living in Indonesia I knew I'd made the right decision. My cat would have been miserable there - or would have come to harm. So I took comfort knowing he was happy, and now being loved and cared for by a new mum.
Best of luck

Hi Freogirl,
I think you made a wise decision, and your cat would only have had a short flight from Oz.

I know what it is like to love an animal, but to subject it to the stress of travelling half way across the world, most humans don’t even like it. To think of bringing an Old English Sheep dog to Bali, even if it gets here what about the weather? The Kintamani dog seems to suffer in the hotter coastal regions with all that fur.
Adopt a local breed of cat or dog, they may not always be the prettiest but they are loyal and smart and affectionate.
