    Default Work Permit question

    Hello everyone.

I have a job offer to work in Bali teaching scuba for a small company in Sanur. The description of the job and the conditions seem alright, except for the fact that they want me to fly over there from the UK on a tourist visa as it is supposedly not possible to apply for a work permit/visa from overseas but has to be done in Indonesia. After the work permit has been processed after two or three weeks they want me to fly to Singapore to get the work visa. I just wanted to know whether anyone can confirm that this is really the only way to do it.

The response to tther worry I had, which was that I do not want to work illegally in Indonesia during the time it takes to get my work permit through, was that I could relax about that, the only person likely to get into trouble would be my employer, not me.

    Thanks for your answers.

I do not claim to be an expert, but I can promise you my KITAS was processed while I still lived in Chicago. I simply went to consulate and they "stamped" it and off to Indonesia I went, KITAS in hand...

You should come in on business visa and they can apply for a work permit from that. The work permit is expensive and money has to be paid for a business visa. (Still cannot work) The tourist visa cost only $25 for a month and cannot be extended. You CANNOT work in any capacity on this.

You can go out to Singapore and get other forms of visa but a work visa??? Not sure.

Suggest you be wary of this offer and get them to change it.

Don't work while you have a tourist visa.

It is however possible to come here on a tourist visa, do the paperwork here, and then go to Singapore to get your Kitas.

I may well be that they think thats more easy, it probably is for a small company.
    That's It !!

That's what they ve told me. Yes, it is a very small company. What are the consequences while working on a tourist visa?

    Consequences?

I don't really know, but it would probably mean spending a lot of time at the police station, payments of fines, and probably, maybe, worst case, your would have to leave the country.

But I guess that in such a case, there are allways arrangements possible that would be satisfactory for all parties. Afterall policemen are underpaid in Indonesia.

I wouldn't worry too much. Just go diving with your friends in Sanur for a while, have some fun, but get your Kitas as soon as possible. Don't let the diving company take you for a ride.

    Are they locals?

I ve just contacted them about my worries concerning the tourist visa and work - so they will send me a letter of sponsor so I can get a business visa for the beginning. And they reckon I can have my kitas 2-3 weeks later. Sounds okay to me now. (?).

The owner is European, however, a part from him and me the rest of the staff is Indonesian.

I am really excited about moving back to Asia. I have been searching this forum for advice where to book flights from the UK or Europe. I am sure there mut be a thread bout it but I couldn't find it (Probably due to the lazy (indonesian?) part of me...). Anyone knows a good (=cheap) travel agent/air line?
