Default U.S. Embassy Jakarta Warden Message

This has to do with the furor within the Muslim world over the cartoon of the prophet Mohammed recently published in a Danish newspaper.

    U.S. Embassy Jakarta

    U.S. Consulate General Surabaya

    Warden Message

    February 6, 2006

The U.S. Embassy informs Americans in Indonesia that demonstrations February 6 in Surabaya against a European diplomatic office spread to the U.S. Consulate General and resulted in rocks and bottles being thrown. The Indonesian police responded and dispersed the crowd. There were no injuries to Consulate General staff, but there was minor damage to the premises. At least three Indonesian police were injured in the incident.

The Embassy is working closely with Indonesian officials to ensure the safety of all American personnel and Mission premises in Indonesia. In order to make adequate arrangements for the safety of consular visitors in Surabaya, routine consular services in Surabaya will be suspended on Tuesday, February 7. Americans needing emergency consular assistance may contact the Consulate General in Surabaya or the Embassy in Jakarta by telephone at the numbers below.

The Embassy reminds all Americans of the need to avoid crowds, to maintain a low profile, and to be vigilant about security at all times. The information in the November 18, 2005 Travel Warning for Indonesia remains valid. All security-related Travel Warnings and Public Announcements, recent Embassy warden messages, and registration information are posted on the Embassy’s website at http://jakarta.usembassy.gov.

The Embassy is located at Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, No. 4-5, Jakarta; the 24-hour telephone number is 021-3435-9000. The telephone number of the Consulate General in Surabaya is 031-295-6400; the telephone number of the U.S. Consular Agency in Bali is 0361-233-605.

Deputy Consul General and Second Secretary

    published in a Danish newspaper.
I belive it has been published almost all over Europe by now, but yes, Denmark was first. As always, alot of angry men express themselves in the only way they can... by violent demonstrations. When when when will the day come for them to learn that there are other ways to make a point and yourself heard. :?

I don't know the answers to your questions Tommy, but I do think it's time to "ditch" your hat, or mail it to Jimbo. :P

    Dear Roy
This is why i stay a Dutch citizen and speak only dutch and bahasa indonesian when i'm in bali. It is unsave to travel this planet as an 'american' citizen,it always has been.
The goverment in the usa has made so many enemies around this planet, that it's citizen suffer.
This is also why i NEVER land/visit Jakarta, fly straight to denpasar-bali,no stops in Java. Its sad that i cannot savely travel java as that is where i was born, perhaps one day when we as humans can be more kind to oneanother.

    Hi Gina

This is weird. I just got back and read the forum before Tommy posted the above. I was thinking the same.

Please take this as a compliment: you somehow remind me of my Javanese grandmother. I can see your high cheekbone and as you are half Dutch as I was made to understand my grandmother had a bit Dutch and Arabic blood.

So I hope you accept Tommy’s suggestion. I look forward to seeing your new avatar.

Gina I have lived in the USA (different places) so I could say that the chance of you getting caught in the dangerous situation is higher than in Java. I wonder whether statistically Americans are actually safer outside the US than within, as it is a country with high violence ref: guns etc. Could someone enlighten us on this.

Good question. My friend asked me the other day whether I am coming back to Bali as an expat or Balinese/Indonesian. He also thinks I have been away from Bali too long.

Just to reiterate what I said on the Valentines thread:

I was born in Yogyakarta but raised in Bali. I have always considered myself Balinese and Indonesian.

I don’t know if you still remember but I have said in the past to you the following:

What do you think I should be: Balinese, Javanese, British or what? Can I not claim myself to be Balinese especially as my dad is indigenous Balinese and I grew up in Bali?

Best wishes from me the young and non-the-wiser, looking forward to rediscovering Bali,
