Hi,
I am moving to Bali next year. I might stay there for 8 months, go back to Denmark during the summer and then head back again. Does it make financial sense to rent for a whole year and try and rent it out while I am gone (2-4 months) or should I rent on a monthly basis (if that's possible at all)?
Hi,
I'm a newbie on this forum and there are others far more experienced than I but I have just been through the whole find-a-villa business (and have friends who have done the same) so I feel I can give you the benefit of my experience.
Monthly rent is not the norm, but that's not to say you can't find it. You'll find that it's appreciably more expensive than putting a year down up front.
If you did rent for a year, renting it out just for that summer period might be tricky. Villas usually need staff to keep them going (pool guy etc) and because of that they need somebody there to manage them. Ideal situation is if you find (paying!) friends to take up the villa during that period you're not there.
Final option: you might be able to find a villa just for the period you want. The noticeboards around where I live (the south of Bali) are crowded with people wanting to rent their villas for all sorts of periods.
As has been often suggested on this forum, the best idea is to come here, find a temporary base, get on your bike and have a look at what's on offer.

I have just learnt that pleasing everyone is impossible. But, pissing them off is a piece of cake
