:) HI! I have been reading this forum for the last two days. It's really great! Thanks to Bert I think and all that share in here, such a wealth of knowlege! My names Dee I recently saw a documentary on tv about international property and lifestyles which triggered a spark of interest on my behalf on the options of living abroad... Ok so I have been toying with the idea of living in bali for a while... And have a few questions I was hoping some of you knowlegable people could help answer for me
1) what can you get for 1 million ruphiahs a week? (Rental, to give me an idea of what the market is live dollar for dollarl)
2) What online resources are there to find rental homes that are available with pictures and prices detailed descriptions of the homes ect? (I had seen one bali-information.com which was nice but very limited in choices beautiful homes though)
3) What are the safest areas to live in? (paitence with this question please :) never set foot in bali hehe and I have read some of your comments already on it being fine but I was wondering area wise which ones are nice and safe?)
4) Are there estate agents out there whom deal with international customers wanting to rent homes in Bali?
5) Is Bahasa Indonesian the main language spoken in bali along with balinese? (I find it so overwhelming thinking about the amount of different languages that are spoken in Bali, as I can only speak english  But trying to learn :) )
6) Is common renting of homes a usual practice in bali or do they usually lease their homes? (I have been reading around on the net and leasing seems to be the dominant option)
7) Is it really cheap in your personal opinion to live in Bali apposed to where you originally come from or countries that you have lived in the past?
8) Is it true that the power sources there are unreliable? If so how often on average in your experience would you say a black out would occur? & if you have invested in a generator was it very expensive?
9) Are Villa's the preffered housing choice of most expats? (they are so damn gorgoues!)
10) When renting a home or leasing for that matter... Which would you reccomend renting/leasing from an expat or local bali people? (I only ask this because it seems from reading on here that it's a lot easier to rent from a fellow expat?)
I think that is all I have to ask right now lol  . Thank you :D in advance if you are able to so kindly offer advice and answers to the above questions.
Welcome Dee !
1) for 50 million a year you can get a nice house.
2) No link to competitors allowed, but a search on the internet does wonders, just skip the number one listings in google :)
3) I think safest are those places where you have locals around you, and you play it nice with them.
4) The low cost rental market is is better organized by the "indonesian" property agents, like century21, lj hooker etc...
5) Yes.
6) What's the difference? Lease is usually long term?
7) Yes.
8.) I don't use a generator, but I use an UPS for my PC.
9) What can you afford?
10) Have your rental notarized, doesn't matter much.
Thank you kindly for your informative reply. I can afford 50 million a year easily. Preferably with a pool and minimum 2 bedrooms. Other than that not fussy at all. With leases as I haven't had one before. Is the years lease usually payed in full or like rent which you pay weekly with a bond up front? Do you think that for 50 million per year a pool would be likely of a reasonable size? Your house is very nice that I saw was up for rent is that $1400 a week or month or for the full 6 months? lol Im very naieve so far in terms of property values and usual charges thus far. Thanks again for the tips :D
Sorry Dee, but I am intrigued. How can you consider living in a place you have "never set foot on"? Maybe I am just old and cautious, shut up Roy!
easy hehe land is land just differnet looking to what im used to. You only live once right ;).
Dee
You are right, you live only once!!!
But life is too short to make a mistake.
Depending on people, Bali could be paradise or hell
Having a first survey trip will be a good idea !
I think that what will decide if bali is hell  or heaven :P is how you get along with the local comunity and also how you adapt to the very different system/culture!
for most open minded people bali is heaven, but I think you should consider to come and stay in bali for a couple of months and get the feeling of the bali lifestyle before you move there for longer term.
most certainly you will find bali as many others - a magical and a for sure special place on earth :)
OK, I'm formulated a couple of questions.
1. With an extended stay in Bali, what length of time does it take to get a 'real feel' for living there?
a. 1 month
b. 3 months
c. 1 year
d. 10 years
2. In order to adapt to the lifestyle, socialising should be limited to:
a. Local community
b. Expat community
c. A mixture of both
d. Tourists :P
Not sure about the scoring though.
