We went to Puger on the coast south of Jember for a Sunday lunch of BBQ fish and cumi. Then people started talking of 200 deaths and I slowly realized they were pointing to the wrecked remains of the boat that was lost at sea with 200 people on December 17. We had a good lunch, but this article in the Jakarta Post Search for missing boat passengers ends | The Jakarta Post says that fish sales fell when fishermen started getting some of the bodies. Lunch for 3 adults and 4 kids coast Rp160,000 and there was plenty left to take home.
Don't know how true it is but my wife recalls stories from back when she was just a small girl of body parts (fingers etc) turning up inside of fish at the Muncar fish markets. Apparently they were from a ferry that had overturned between Gilimanuk and Ketapang. Regardless of authenticity, they are a superstitious bunch and I'm sure the same story has spread long before this boat ever went down.
Fight apathy! Or don't.
is it Puger?!?! haha I always thought it was "boogers".. Ive always wanted to go camping on this beach.. my only cool little place to hang out in the boyfriends village haha..
anyone know if its safe to camp at? Partner thinks not but he is overly cautious in Java - perhaps for a reason?
I don't know how camping at Puger would be, but at Watu Ulo, a bit east of Puger, there is a reserve that you pay to enter, and yesterday (Chinese New Year) there were many people having picnics etc and many tents along the beach. I think most people visiting here probably come from Jember, but maybe also from other places, even as far as Surabaya (from number plate watching).
