I recently read on a thread here that 5 kilos of red rice makes an excellent gift for Balinese friends. I'm in Seminyak and have tried the supermarkets, Bali Deli and the night market and have yet to find any for sale. Where can I find some? Thanks for any suggestions.

Tabanan is your best bet to find red rice as that is where the sawahs of red rice are located for the most part. There it will run about 6k a kilo. Bali Buddha here in Ubud charges 16k a kilo! At Makro it runs about 8 or 9k a kilo. If you ask for "beras merah", the shop keepers will understand what you are looking for.

Five kilo of red rice is a great gift for a Balinese family, and it will go far as they normally cook it mixed with white rice...normal Bali rice, at a ratio of about 1 part red rice to 4 parts white rice. Good luck but it should be easy enough to find.

Thank you so much Roy. I found the rice and my friends were delighted with the gift. From their reaction it's more appreciated than the usual T-shirts! Saying "beras merah" also saved me many steps at Makro!
