Default Medical care - no insurance

I have a cyst in my armpit since the last 2 days.
I need a doctor or instance who can make an incision to get the dirt out.
However my insurance won't cover this so I'm looking for an affordable place to get this fairly simple medical threatment.
    Any suggestions?

You didn't say where you are in Bali, or how much longer you'll be here.
Also, what is "affordable" for you?

Rather than getting the run-around with "private doctors", after waiting for ages to see one, I would go straight to a hospital. But which one?

There is a new one in Jalan Tantular, Renon (Denpasar), called The Royal Bali Hospital (BROS). It's in the same street as the Australian Consulate.

A "normal" consulation with a GP there will cost about Rp 200,000 (if you have a KITAS, you pay local prices - much less at Rp 50,000).
I'm only guessing here, but I estimate that getting your cyst drained under local anaesthetic would cost less than Rp 1 million (maybe half that).

I've been to BROS several times recently, both for myself and my step-son. The hospital is very clean, is relatively efficient and parking isn't a problem (not like RS Sanglah).

    Hope you get better soon.

Prima Medika in Denpasar, is where I'd be heading if I had to have a cyst removed. 250,000 for consultation without Kitas. No idea what the procedure would cost you.

I'd try the Royal Hospital or B.R.O.S as it's called in Renon. I just had minor surgery there on my nether regions and it was incredibly good service and well priced. A 1hr op for 3 million with KITAS so not sure on non KITAS price.

i used to get horrible armpit cysts (would turn black) and my doctor got a little bit sick of Slicing and dicing me every few weeks so he recommend I put Magnaplasm on it, it is known as Drawing Cream and some how pulls whatever it is in your skin out. The healing time was so so short compared to having stitches in my arm pit and didnt hurt a bit.

Just put the cream on at night and in the morning all the junk is out.

Otherwise the Nakula Klinik on Jl Nakula is pretty damned cheap and always been fantastic. I had a 3rd degree infected burn on my leg that required daily needles and dressing changes and I paid a once off fee for 220,000 including all my prescriptions and on going care.

I went back there on my last trip as I was lucky enough to get Pneumonia and all of my treatment was 135,000 - 6 different prescriptions, 2 injections and the consult.

    KLINIK NAKULA RECOMMENDED ++

    Thanks for all advice!

Over the days turned out to be an infection rather than a cyst.

I was mentally preparing myself to go to Prima Medika, but went to Klinik Nakula as it was just minutes from my home.

Had some second thoughts about it though, as 'soontobeexpat' mentioned that it was 'pretty damed cheap'
    However...
The premises didn't look dirt cheap at all, the front desk was very helpful, got a doctor within 1 minute to check me up.
The doctor was helpful and most important of all, she followed all hygienic rules, as you would expect from a house doctor in the West.
Seconds after she put on her plastic gloves, her handphone - laying on her desk - was ringing very loud with an annoying ringtone.
I know many doctors who would have *at least* pushed the red button to silent the phone. She did not but instead got her assistant in to make the phone stop.

She explained what and why she did things with most patience and detail.
Got some creams and pills, next consultation is on Monday to see if it got better or not.

As I don't like taking any medicine, and when I have to I want to know what I'm taking, I called my doctor in my home country for some extra advice.
The type of antibiotic I got was absolutely the right choice - something which is quite remarkable in Indonesia.

Consultation, cream, antibiotics, painkillers, full cleaning set - Rp 180,000

If you're in the Seminyak district, this is definitely a place you want to go for first aid!

Not easy to find though. When you're coming from Sunset, it's on your left, about 100m before the bridge.

HAHA DONT LET HER GIVE YOU A NEEDLE IN YOUR BUM.. OH MY GOD SHE IS BRUTAL WITH NEEDLES!!

It is a fantastic place and incredibly cheap (esp for the area), I went a DPS clinic a few years ago and just to see the doctor it was 450,000 and had to go back twice.. total joke.

Glad you had a good experience there

Rather in my bum than in my vains.
I have a severe needle phobia and in my opinion there is no way how to insert needles in a human body without being brutal.
A couple shots of Tequila probably will help - however with the antibiotics that's maybe not the most smart solution also.
I guess it takes pain to fight pain.

My first medical condition in 25 years makes me think about getting some insurance. Any recommended Bali expat insurance providers?

I went to Nakula Klinik over the weekend cause my doctor was out of town and I had classic symptoms of strep throat/tonsilitis. That place was like a bad joke. She took my temperature, glimpsed at my throat and told me I had fever & flu. No physical, nothing. I had terrible rash from the fever and I had to ask her to look at it 3 times! She at first said 'no need!' I had to beg because the rash so bad! She didn't even know what it was from. Then she sent me off with a bag full of five different medications, never asked if I had any allergy to medication, and I asked her 'don't you think if I take so many medication at once I might get sick?'. She responded "yes!" and sent me on my way! Lets just say I left feeling quite discouraged, but luckily my doctor back and I'm now on the proper medication & antibiotics for the tonsilitis. I really don't recommend the place at all, especially for anything you may need them to diagnose.

I propose we compile a medical referral forum from our experiences of care givers in Bali

what with so many clinic businesses springing up in your face in touristed areas to divert some expat dollars their way-let's pool our knowledge here and cut to the chase

    I'll start:

Bone Specialist (bone setting) : Dr Siki-if you or your friend need bone setting after say a motor cycle accident?
He is "on call" to the major hospitals that you may end up if you've just been scraped off the road-and he has his own private practice for after care - I have several pins and a couple of plates put in with his expert care and can vouch for his work

Internist : Dr Sucitra at Rumah Sakit Sanglah- the international wing received much aid money & modern equipment and was upgraded as a result of the first Bali bombing and so is a good choice for diagnostic tests- ultrasound etc...

this is when the advantage of KITAS pays-getting you local price-ultrasound scan for around ten dollars if I remember rightly
much cheaper than Bumrungrad hospital in Thailand - just be sure you take your KITAS with you at the beginning - it is a bureaucracy

Tropical Medicine: Dr Julius Daniel Tanasale - a very pleasant and knowledgable doctor who keeps up to date and has worked on various hospital boards (Timor for example) Fluent english and great bedside manner
    0361-742-9417
    081 339 132 993
    APOTEK Pondok Indah

    resident at Prima Medika
call and ask which days he is attending clinic there 236225
    Prima Medika Hospital - Home

Prima Medika-is a good hospital that attracts some high class qualified doctors -
3 tiers of room you can opt for while convalescing if you have any operation or in house care there

X-rays - SOS I would not recommend this clinic for anything else ...,
But their X-ray technician is very good and the equipment is good too.
priced between local price at local establishment using older equipment (100,000) and tourist price (i.e. double) for the x rays that is.
other services I have heard can be expensive and reportedly all you get is a referral to where you should have gone and who you should have seen in the first place....I have heard complaints from people made to wait (for first aid care obtained after the referral) while they have to pay heavy consultation fee before they can even go ! something wrong with that model

that is the purpose of this thread-let's pool experiences and share the best specific recommendations we can so that we can avoid wasting time & money at BIM/SOS type places.better if you/we know already in case of illness or emergency when you need good swift first aid- time may be crucial

speaking of pretenders - when you need Laboratory tests - if you can go straight to Prodia clinic - I find it only doubles my bill by consulting some clinic or other in Ubud when I know what I need e.g. widal & IGM blood tests for salmonella/typhoid-
so long as you have a GP or health professional that you trust and they can competently fill out the tests that you need in eachcase, wether it be liver function; check cholesterol levels; scan for cancer indicators;test red cell & white cell count when you suspect dengue fever or other bloodwork ;stool tests etc.
of course you do need that good GP to start with.

    Website : .: Prodia Laboratories :.
    Email : denpasar@prodia.co.id
    SMS : +628113461010
    Telp : +62361-261001 (Hunting)
    Fax : +62361-236349

Ubud Prodia is a small office in front of Ubud clinic
call Ketut -780-7801 for hours of operation...
and timing to deliver your various bodily fluids to be taken into Denpasar for testing

then later you can possibly get your results maybe by email prodia.result@yahoo.com
or over the phone by calling Nina in DPS clinic
ask up front when you donate your samples
helpful and hassle free -a boon when your not feeling well enough to run around Denpasar and have to go back again!@

knowing who you want to see before you experience the need to see anybody can help take the anxiety out of what can otherwise be a confusing time….with many of the specialist medical practitioners in Bali- they may be on call for various hospitals- in which case you can go to the hospital you feel comfortable in and ask for the resident specialist on call

there are exceptions of course with some doctors being bound by contract to work at certain hospital(s) not others-so once you decide on your doctor of choice-enquire which hospitals he is contracted with...
