Bali is likely to see fewer tourists celebrating the coming New Year's Eve, as impacts of the global liquidity crisis set in, officials say.

Hotels on the island have already received cancellations for up to 40 percent of bookings made for November and December, Bali Tourism Agency head I Gede Nurjaya told reporters in Kuta on Friday.

Nurjaya said the cancellations were made by tourists from the top ten countries of origin: Japan, Australia, Taiwan, S. Korea, China, Malaysia, England, France, US and Italy.

"Tourists from these countries contribute more than 30 percent of income into Bali's tourism industry," he said.

The present situation was similar to trends that followed the first and second Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005, respectively, Nurjaya said.

"A global crisis will have serious impacts on Bali's tourism industry and other sectors in Indonesia," he said.

From the beginning of 2008 through to the end of October, the number of tourists visiting Bali reached 1.6 million -- 23percent more than during the same months in 2007.

Nurjaya, however, was pessimistic about whether Indonesia could reach the government's target of 1.9 million tourist arrivals this year.

Are we suprised given the state of the worlds economy? Some thought it would not happen. I believe like everywhere else house prices will also be affected but we shall see.

Bali may be an island but it is not immune from the worlds problems. Lets hope they will be over soon but I doubt it. :(

It's way more than just the economic downturn. In Australia, Europe and in various travel forums the porn law, the alcohol FUBAR, and the terrorism warnings / Bali Bombers executions are all having a fairly serious effect. I've seen all these mentioned as reasons for not coming and I've had questions from friends wanting to visit about each.

Sadly Visit Indonesia Year 2008 is about to have a flat ending.

From what I understand travel isn't hurting that badly internationally (about 8% down) as fares are falling with oil prices. I've been booking flights thru the middle east, Europe and the US in Jan / Feb and a lot of these are very heavily booked and I've had trouble getting on.

The only fortunate thing for bali, compared to say mexico or the carribean is that the US is not a primary market, and its probably fair to assume that nobody is hurting as much at present as the americans - but hey, even that observation probably has several flaws..

Tourism is extremely cyclical, anywhere in the world - it'll bounce back sooner or later..

No wonder I could book my flights to Indonesia without any difficulties at all and got them all confirmed in one swoop. I've got already a place in Bali for free but I'm sure to book a Hotel now is easy and the room rates must be cheaper.
Anyone knows if there are any changes on the price list of any of the tourism business given that it's dropped 40%?

I doubt you'll be getting cheaper hotels, the prices have already risen in most hotels.

Some of Bali's hotelier and resort managements are confident that even with the global financial crisis, the annual hotel rate increase will not affect the tourist industry.

However, worldwide businesspeople, especially those working on U.S.-related business sectors, are expected to cut their travel budgets -- including vacation travel plans.

Aston International hotels, resorts and residences head of marketing Norbert Vas said he was sure his overseas customers would accept a hotel rate increase of 10 to 15 percent and 20 to 25 percent for Bali's villas.

"We are sure that next year our hotel business will be bullish. I believe the market can accept the price hike. I have talked to our customers and most of them agree with the new rate," he told The Jakarta Post over the weekend.

He said the properties under the group's management would see an average increase of 7 percent next year, while they usually increase by 8 to 17 percent annually.

He said demands from Korea, Europe and Japan as well as in other emerging markets such as China and Russia would still be stable amidst the crisis.

"The expensive Australian dollar is another advantage for us because we predict they will choose Bali as the closest and least expensive holiday destination," Norbert said, adding that even with the rate increase, the island's hotels were still under-priced as compared to Thai hotels in rival tourist destination Phuket.

As for the domestic market, he said next year's presidential election would be another blessing, as people would use the hotels' convention rooms.

The only concern is another terrorist attack, he said. "That's the only thing that can hurt us now."

Sugiono, sales and marketing manager of Orangjje hotels which are located in Denpasar and Legian, shared the same security concern.

"Security is a key factor. After the Bali bombings, giant hotels that previously were not interested in the domestic market went after it, which made the competition a lot more fierce," he said.

He said his hotels had not been affected by the current economic turmoil because they focused solely on the domestic market.

"We will increase our hotel rate by 15 percent next year. Insya Allah (God willing) the customers can understand and accept it," Sugiono said.
