Hopefully the moderators will make this sticky so people will get a good idea for what it costs to live in Bali. Let's try to keep the amount of "chatter" down and have more information posted. Here's what I suggest:
Item, Location, Cost (in Rupiahs)
Description under here, say you are going to say a three bedroom bungalow with running water and AC 2 blocks from the surf in Kuta Bay. Then write all that info down here under the item.
This will allow people to post information and have a pretty good idea for what we can expect. I myself am taking enough money for a round-trip flight, and $400/mo to live off. It's just me going at this alone for the first time out of the US, and it doesn't take much to make me happy. I guess, post away!
Yes, a highly organized and logical approach. This definitely works in the West, and especially in the U.S., but it is a hopeless approach in Bali, and SE Asia in general. Bali has a history of a barter economy, not a monetary economy. It's about who you are and who you know and how well you negotiate.
Going rates are known though, but whether you'll get them is anyone's guess.
Good idea, but wrong culture...
(Was this chatter?)

this is why i'll look for a house in bali instead of through the internet.
