Anyone know how to rent an apartment at local rates

I am sure there are apartments in the suburbs that are being rented at some reasonable local rates in a nice decent middle class neighbourhood. Most countries have them.

I am from Malaysia, and would like to think that i can somehow start out by renting first, know the local scene before going further.

Any advise?

There is a lot of areas you can rent houses for local price. I found out about this areas because I know sombodey that know somebodey who know about a house for rent. this areas is caled BTM ( I think)

But maybe there are some sort of local papers or apartmetn blocks that the locals know about.

It will be difficult if it is all word of mouth.

this areas is called BTN, all the locals know where they are. just ask around the area you want to stay

Hi - it is as Ilu says - really if you want local rates you need to just ask around in the area you like.
We did this - rode around on the motorbike for a couple of days checking out which area we liked and identified the BTNs.
Then we went into the BTN and asked at the warung or small shop if any house for contract. Also just riding up and down we saw houses with contract notice in the window. We soon found what we were looking for.
